Respirator masks prevent various risks

On the one hand, respiratory protection can protect the wearer from inhaling disruptive to life-threatening substances. On the other hand, respiratory protection can also protect the environment from the wearer, this factor plays a role in food production or diseases. When choosing, you need to consider the purpose of the product. For example, a mask with the best filter effect can protect the user from hazardous substances when inhaled. However, if these masks have valves, they release the exhaled air unhindered into the environment and are practically ineffective in this direction.

Filter effect of the masks is 80% to 99%

There are three tiers of FFP respirators in the European Union. FFP-1 masks form the lowest category. They are used for non-toxic dust and filter out at least 80%. Typical areas of application are construction and demolition work or workplaces in the food industry where there is a lot of suspended matter in the air. They also provide adequate protection from non-toxic dust generated during grinding operations.

FFP-2 masks go one step further, they can also prevent pollutants and block at least 94%. They are suitable, for example, for oil mist, concrete and coal dust or old mineral wool fibres. FFP-3 masks offer the highest level of protection. They can resist viruses, bacteria, fungal spores, carcinogens and radioactive materials. The required filter effect is at least 99%.

Pros and cons of valve masks

There are breathing masks with and without valves. The valve opens when you exhale, allowing air to flow freely. Compared to masks without this device function, the comfort is higher. However, if you do not want to release pathogens from infected carriers to the outside, you should refrain from using such masks. For this reason, even simple mouth and nose protection without FFP classification is better than other high-quality FFP 3 valve masks.

For hygienic reasons, most respiratory masks are disposable and should be removed and disposed of after 8 hours at the latest. But there are also reusable respirators where only the filter element is replaced. The mask itself can be cleaned and disinfected with appropriate agents.
